Solidarity in times of Corona

Information about support
and neighboorhood assistance

What's all this about?

The consequences of the Corona crisis hit all of us, but not all to the same extent. In the next weeks and months, it will therefore be essential to support those, who are hit the hardest: people who belong to the so-called risk group (age above 50/60; particular prior diseases; weakened circulatory system); people in quarantine; families that need care for their children; medical and nursery staff; workers, whose existence is threatened by the crisis; and others.

At the same time, many people are willing to help - this is amazing and should not be taken for granted. To function effectively, so that we as helpers can get coordinated and offer support where it is needed, we pool solidarity initiatives and information on this website.

We are neither experts nor medical staff, but solidary and supporting neighbours. In case of emergency, please dial 112 or the medical on-call service (116117).

Frequently asked questions

Most people who have followed the news in the last few days know it: Corona is life-threatening for some groups of people, but not for others. Particularly vulnerable people cannot choose isolation, it is their only perspective. These people have to take precautions and, for example, build up stocks of supplies. As a completely healthy and safe person this is not the case, especially not to the same extent. We are promoting consideration and solidarity.

We want to organise neighbourly and help in solidarity. We offer a platform for exchange for this extraordinary situation, which affects us all, but not equally hard. In the following you will find links and informations about the coronavirus and a possibility to post and receive offers of help. Isolation, hoarding and selfishness will not help us in such a challenging situation. What we need now is solidarity, mutual support and cohesion even in isolation. Because we may distance ourselves spatially, but socially we stand together closely.

First of all: everyone can contribute something!
Whether it’s lending a car, providing transport services, looking after children, shopping, taking out the rubbish, offering advice according to profession and ability, making bicycles available, redistributing food and commodities, organising financial support and so on. Depending on the situation and needs can be arranged here.

On this page, we do not provide general information about the country-level and global expansion of the Corona virus and how to handle this situation. But we can recommend the following, trustworthy, sources:

To help older people and those at high risk of infection for other reasons, you can offer to help them with their errands, such as buying groceries, getting something from the pharmacy, walking the dog or posting/picking up their mail. Please make sure to minimize direct contact with the people you are helping. Hang a notice in the stairwell that your neighbours can see without having to touch it themselves; pay without cash and leave your purchases outside the door. Families whose children have to be looked after due to the closure of day-care centres and schools, are affected as well. Especially for parents in positions that are critical to the system (such as employees in the health care system) it is essential that they can work and that the children do not get infected, as otherwise the parents could also fall ill. If the conditions described under #3 apply to you and you feel ready to take care of one or more children in an external flat, you can provide valuable support. For more information see #9.

In general, in these days it is important to reduce the contact between people as much as possible. Unfortunately, this also means that exaggerated actionism can potentially cause damage: if an infected person helps in many households, he or she runs the risk of spreading the disease more than if this person follows his or her normal behaviour.

  1. Help locally, that means e.g. your neighbours.
  2. Help a few, but do it consistently.
  3. For example, if you want to babysit, find one family and help only that one family. Don't meet with people other than those you want to help.

If you are or want to be a quarantine hero, don't try to help as many others as possible, but reduce contacts to the absolute minimum and help consistently. Less is more!

Directly after the outbreak of the virus in Germany, the so-called #NachbarschaftsChallenge (neighbourhood challenge) was created. People who are less at risk from the virus offer their neighbours support with errands via notices

TELEGRAM

In order to build neighbourhood structures based on solidarity and to ensure that support arrives where it is needed in a coordinated and targeted manner, people are organising themselves in several neighbourhoods as well as throughout Lüneburg via telegram groups.

Here you will find an overview of the district groups and other groups, which you can join with one click: https://linktr.ee/SolidarischeNachbarschaftLG

There you will receive the most important information in the pinned message and you will find links to the soli groups of the different neighbourhood. If your neighbourhood does not have a group yet, you can create one and share the invitation link in the Lüneburg-wide group so that others can find your group.

Telegram is a free app that can be used via smartphone and PC. It works similar to WhatsApp, but offers more features.

NEBENAN.DE

On the online portal nebenan.de many people offer support or post requests. Since all users have to be verified, trust is very high. At the same time, a new registration is only possible with your address. Activation of your account can take some time, which is why this option is especially useful for already registered users.

Here you will find parents who are looking for trustworthy caretakers for their children and young people (especially students) who are willing to offer this. As childcare is a sensitive issue, potential guardians introduce themselves briefly and parents can then contact them. Requests to join the group are answered within a very short time.

Lots of them.

The drastic reduction of visiting hours in old people's and nursing homes and the recommendation not to put older people at risk of infection through personal contact increases the risk of isolation and loneliness for these people. Nevertheless, it is not advisable to visit elderly people personally. Instead, telephone calls or letters are a good idea. The city of Lüneburg is setting up a special telephone line for citizens, through which senior citizens are introduced to the support services.
Currently, online groups and platforms are emerging everywhere. Many, just like this one, have a local or regional background. Here is a list.
.
These are the supra-regional platforms which we currently know of:

We believe that support is best organised where it is offered and needed. Supra-regional platforms can serve many purposes, from which we also benefit, but the most solidary way of living is in one's own city - or even better in one's own neighbourhood. Furthermore, we consider it useful to bundle local and regional information and offers on this platform. What would be the point of having someone from Munich who offers to walk your dog?

Beyond the organizing team of the joint project "Living Lüneburg" we are numerous solidary neighbours who create (not only) digital offers. Many students and people of all ages belong to us.
